The call for proposals having been closed, it is now time for the workshop. An immersive two-day which will be held within three different research areas. Fondazione Giangiacomo Feltrinelli will host young activists, researchers and practitioners from different fields of study and action in Europe for the FeltrinelliCamp.

The three European Feltrinelli Camp – organized in collaboration with national and international universities and research centres, as well as with institutional stakeholders of Fondazione Giagiacomo Feltrinelli – will conclude an entire season of research activities – Sarabanda 2021 – respectively focusing on three different topics and which be held in the last quarter of 2021. First up is Broken Cities.

Re-composing eco-social cleavages for a new urban agenda

The Broken Cities – Feltrinelli Camp will be dedicated to examining challenges, vulnerabilities and opportunities that our cities and territories are facing from the ecological, social and economic point of view, the latter two especially exacerbated by the pandemic. The workshop intends to contribute to rethink models and practices that can play a key role in the creation of a shared, and no longer fragmented, space that includes heterogeneous identities and promotes sustainable lifestyles and healthy communities.

Biographies

Ananya Roy, Professor of Urban Planning, Social Welfare, and Geography at UCLA

She is the inaugural Director of the UCLA Luskin Institute on Inequality and Democracy. Ananya’s scholarship has focused on urban transformations in the global South, with particular attention to the making of “world-class” cities and the dispossessions and displacements that are thus wrought. In a separate line of inquiry, Ananya has been concerned with new regimes of international development, especially those that seek to convert poverty into entrepreneurial capitalism and the economies of the poor into new markets for global finance.

Lorenzo Kihlgren Grandi, PhD, Lecturer at Sciences Po and Chairman of Urban Flag

He is the founder and chair of Urban Flag and a lecturer in City Diplomacy at Sciences Po Paris, École Polytechnique, and Columbia University. His primary expertise and research interests are in the international action of cities and their multilateral response to global challenges such as sustainable development, intercultural dialogue, and digital transition. He served as an officer of the City of Milan’s International Relations Department and as an advisor and content strategist to the International Association of Francophone Mayors (AIMF). He is currently an advisor on city diplomacy strategies to numerous municipalities, city networks, and international organizations.

Nadina Galle, PhD, Industrial Ecology & Urban Ecological Engineering

She is an ecological engineer, driven by a love for ecology and a fascination with technology, she researches, designs, and pilots emerging technologies to build better urban ecosystems for people and nature. A framework I call the “Internet of Nature”. With over a decade of experience in academia across four continents, her scientific research is combined with years working at—and building her own—tech start-ups. She delivers keynotes, moderate global events, disseminate knowledge, and launches products at the nexus of cities, ecology, and technology. Work that has been recognized by BBC Earth, National Geographic, Forbes, The Next Web, Newsweek, ELLE, and the European Space Agency.

Prof. Dr. Tuna Taşan-Kok

Prof. Dr. Tuna Taşan-Kok holds the position of Chair of Urban Planning and Governance at the University of Amsterdam. Tuna has wide-ranging knowledge and experience in the fields of urban social geography and urban planning and has worked for several high-ranking international organisations with connections to extensive international research networks, with whom she actively collaborates. She is interested in analysing urban transformation from different angles of social geography and spatial planning.

Gabriele Pasqui, Polytechnic Milan

Graduated in Economic and Social Disciplines at “L. Bocconi” University of Milan and in Philosophy at the University of Milan and PhD in Territorial Public Policies at the Department of Economic and Social Analysis of the Territory at the University Institute of Architecture of Venice. Delegate of the Rector of Politecnico di Milano for the social responsibility policies of the University.

Alessandro Balducci, Architect and PhD in Territorial Planning

Professor of Urban Planning and Policies at the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies, Politecnico di Milano.  He has also taught at the Faculty of Architecture of Pescara, he has been visiting scholar at the University of Berkeley and visiting professor at the Universities of Reims, Tongji University, Aalto University, MIT Cambridge and at the Academy of Architecture of Mendrisio.

Laura Saija, Researcher of type b in the disciplinary field ICAR 20 (Technique and Urban Planning)

She worked as Assistant Professor at the Department of City and Regional Planning, School of Urban Affairs and Public Policies, University of Memphis, TN, USA. She holds a PhD in Architectural, Urban and Environmental Design and Recovery from the University of Catania, Italy. Her research interests straddle the fields of urban and territorial design and planning for local development.

Richard Sennett, Centennial Professor in Sociology, Lonson School of Economics

University Professor of the Humanities at New York University. His ethnographic, historical, and theoretical research work has studied in depth the social ties in cities and the effects of urban living. Among other awards Richard Sennett has received the Spinoza Prize, the Hegel Prize, and an honorary degree from the University of Cambridge.

Massimo Bricocoli, Director of the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies, Politecnico di Milano

He taught at IUAV and Cà Foscari University in Venice, Université du Luxembourg and HafenCity University in Hamburg, where he has been a Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. He deals with forms and modes of public action in the government of the territory, the links between welfare policies and urban policies, housing policies.

Monika Dernai, BMW Corporate Strategy

In her current role in Corporate Strategy, Monika Dernai leads the Urban Mobility Team. She is responsible for urban intelligence, and data analytics, as well as monitoring urban mobility markets for the deduction of strategic premises. She also is entrusted with the strategy and implementation of Smart City projects.

Monika Dernai joined BMW Group in 2007 and has an extensive background regarding BMW Group vehicles and Mobility Services. As head of product research she was responsible for BMW’s vehicle and urban research projects, gaining in-depth insights about e.g. BMW’s electric fleet and associated services as well as Urban Mobility topics.

Francesca Gelli,  Associate Professor in Political Science at IUAV University of Venice

Since 2016, holder of the Jean Monnet European Chair on “The urban and territorial dimension of European Union Policies“; she teaches “City Governance”, “Co-design of urban commons”, “Policy Design”.

Eric Klinenberg, professor of social sciences, Director of the Institute for Public Knowledge at New York University

He is the author of Palaces for the People: How Social Infrastructure Can Help Fight Inequality, Polarization, and the Decline of Civic Life (Crown, 2018), Going Solo: The Extraordinary Rise and Surprising Appeal of Living Alone (The Penguin Press, 2012), as well as the editor of Cultural Production in a Digital Age, co-editor of Antidemocracy in America (Columbia University Press, 2019), and co-author, with Aziz Ansari, of the New York Times #1 bestseller Modern Romance (The Penguin Press, 2015).

Saskia Sassen, sociologist and economist

Known for her analyses of globalization and transnational processes. The success of her books quickly made her one of the most cited authors in globalization studies. After teaching sociology at the University of Chicago, she currently teaches at Columbia University and the London School of Economics.

Filipe Araújo, Vice President of Innovation and Environment

Graduated in Electrical Engineering from the Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto. Councillor for Innovation and Environment of the Municipality of Porto (2013-2017 term of office), Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Porto Municipal Environment Company, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Porto Energy Agency, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Porto Energy Agency.

Isabelle Anguelovski, direttrice del BCNUEJ, professore di ricerca dell’ICREA

Senior Researcher and Principal Investigator at ICTA and coordinator of the research group Healthy Cities and Environmental Justice at IMIM. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Studies from Science Po Lille and a Master’s in International Development at the Université de Paris 1 Sorbonne, pursued a Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management at Harvard University and obtained a PhD in Urban Studies and Planning from MIT before returning to Europe in 2011 with a Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowship.

Stefano Boeri, Architect and Urbanist

In 1980 he graduates in Architecture at Politecnico di Milano and in 1989 he obtains the PhD in Urban Planning at IUAV University of Venice. Full Professor of Urban Design at Politecnico di Milano, he is visiting professor at various universities including the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam, the Polytechnic of Lausanne, the Strelka Institute in Moscow. Since February 2018, he is the new president of the Triennale di Milano, a four-year position.

Marco Ranzato, Researcher and Lecturer at the Department of Architecture, University of Rome

He is an architect-urbanist (Master in Architecture, IUAV Venice, Italy) and PhD in Environmental Engineering (University of Trento, Italy).  Between 2013 and 2020, he carried out research activities at the Faculty of Architecture La Cambre-Horta of the Universitè libre de Bruxelles (Belgium) where, between 2016 and 2020, he was among the scientific coordinators of the Urban Lab Metrolab Brussels (of which he is still a member).

Carla Tedesco, associate professor of Urban Technique and Planning

She is a member of the teaching board of the Doctorate School in Territorial Planning and Public Policies of the IUAV University of Venice. PhD in Spatial Planning and Public Policies of the Territory, she has focused her research activity on the analysis of urban and local development policies, paying particular attention to the changes induced by the process of European integration in the practices of transformation of the territory in Italy.
